I have an old Nuvi 255, probably 8 to 10 years old. I wanted a GPS map for a driving trip in Ireland. I checked the specs on Garmin.com and it said it would use a micro SD card. There is slot on the side of my Nuvi 255 although it looks more like some kind of plug portal. So I purchased the City Navitator Europe NT. But now that I have micro SD card, I see it is way too big for the one and only 'slot' on my old Nuvi 255. Will I be able to use the micro SD card and Nuvi 255 together? Do I need some kind of adapter cord and if so where can I get one? Or is my Nuvi just too old and I should upgrade my GPS and if that is the case, would a Nuvi 54LM be a good model? Would it take a micro SD card?
Garmin is a company that produces consumer, professional aviation, and marine devices that make use of the Global Positioning System for navigational assistance. Devices such as hand-held GPS units, in-vehicle units are common. The following is list of current and discontinued products produced by Garmin Ltd. NOTE: Each column within each category reads from top to bottom. The microSD memory card slot on the Garmin Nuvi 3597LMTHD is in the middle of the bottom back side of the GPS. Yes. Just get a micro SD to SD adaptor. They are available at basically all local electronics stores or on-line at places such as Amazon....Will I be able to use the micro SD card and Nuvi 255 together? Do I need some kind of adapter cord and if so where can I get one? ...- I'm a bit confused by your post... but I have a Nuvi 205 which should be the same hardware, so maybe I can help. There is in fact a Micro SD card slot on the left side of the Nuvi.
If you have a card that's too big to fit, then it's not a micro SD card. However, micro SD cards are often sold along with adaptors. The adaptor looks just like a full sized SD card, but it has a slot containing the micro SD card.
Garmin distributes their maps on this kind of card. Did you buy a Garmin map on a card, or just a blank card? Look closely at the opposite end of the card from the contacts. You should see the little card that's plugged into the adaptor. Remove it, and that should fit the slot of your Nuvi 255.
Or maybe you are asking something else? Regardless, the nuvi 255 does indeed use a micro SD card, and if you have some kind of card that won't fit the slot, then it's not a micro SD card. :) - Boyd, wasn't that the model that was changed mid-life, along with different firmware to go with the different hardware? I think the older models used a full-sized SD card slot while the later model were changed over to microSD along with the firmware change. It caused a lot of confusion due to these changes.
- I ordered a micro sd card from garmin. The invoice says micro sd. The package says micro sd. But inside is a regular sd card. Now I know the difference between regular and micro. Unfortunately garmin is closed until Tuesday. Thanks everyone.
- Did you read what Boyd wrote? The micro card comes in a full size sd card 'caddy' ... you just need to withdraw the micro sd card from the caddy.
- I'm pretty sure that my post has the solution to your problem. Garmin's cards will fit your device, but they must be removed from the included adaptor that is too large.
After you remove the SD card from the full size adapter (caddy) be careful when you insert it into tthe Nuvi. It should go in easy and lock, do not force it or you can cause problems. The locking mechanism is spring loaded, to remove the card, using your finger nail, press in on the card and it will eject.Did you read what Boyd wrote? Garmin Nuvi 40 Sd Slot Software
I just bought my 1st gps; a 50LM. Everything is new for me. The Owner's Manual states (page 17) 'The device supports microSD and micro SDHC memory or data cards. Insert a memory card into the slot on the device.'
Where is the slot on the device? I can't find it.

- I don't have a 50 but the slot is generally around the edge of the nuvi, bear in mind it's a micro sd slot, so not that large
Looking from the back side of the Nuvi, it's at the lower right corner, just above the lower right case screw. (About 1' to the right of the power cord jack.)I just bought my 1st gps; a 50LM.
